Scorpion<\/em>, Christian Cantrell\u2019s philosophical techno-thriller, offers a glimpse into the brutal future knocking at our door.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Future Is Now<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Just a stone\u2019s throw away. And yes\u2014it\u2019s just as ugly as we imagined. Scorpion<\/em> could be set five years from now. Or ten. Or the day after tomorrow. The staggering pace of technological advancement has already brought the achievements of the near future into view. And artificial intelligence\u2014as we\u2019re already experiencing\u2014is changing everything, day by day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Christian Cantrell\u2014an engineer and software developer in civilian life\u2014offers a vision that\u2019s filled with both the familiar and the unknown. The tech and gadgets in Scorpion<\/em> are so convincingly real, you\u2019ll find yourself wondering whether you read about them here first\u2014or in yesterday\u2019s news.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In any case, they\u2019re surrounded by the gentle warmth of familiarity\u2014and thankfully, by credibility as well. That\u2019s where many future-set thrillers stumble right out of the gate, either trying to say too much or trying to say it all at once.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But there\u2019s one thing you definitely haven\u2019t heard of: no one has ever received a message from the future. (Or at least, no one\u2019s been willing to admit it\u2014so far.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

So what are the messages in Scorpion<\/em> about? Well, danger\u2014obviously. A time when physics and information technology advance to the point where anyone with a bit of know-how can throw together a neutron bomb out of toaster parts and a dismantled washing machine\u2026 yeah, that\u2019s going to be a dangerous era. The best part? It\u2019s not even that far off anymore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Scorpion<\/em> Is Driven by Its Characters<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Some books grab you instantly. By sentence two, you’re hooked. Scorpion<\/em> is one of them. With a style that\u2019s often ironic, sometimes downright mocking, it pulls you right into the story. Just like it does with its characters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cantrell\u2019s novel belongs to that rare breed of thrillers that really dive deep into character development. Quinn Mitchell\u2019s personal tragedy gets just as much attention as the CIA\u2019s desperate manhunt for the Elite Assassin.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

We also get to know the Elite Assassin quite well. Turns out he\u2019s actually a pretty decent guy\u2014with the calm and patience of a Hindu yogi. Minor drawback: he has a kill list that looks like it includes both Santa Claus and Mother Teresa of Calcutta.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But the real cherry on top is, of course, Henrietta Ji. She\u2019s straight out of a manga\u2014right down to the vibe.<\/strong> And as if that weren\u2019t enough, she also happens to be the smartest character in the book. Those lucky readers with a Japanese schoolgirl fetish are in for an absolute treat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Killing Is a Fun Pastime!<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Or, well, not exactly. I mean, it shouldn\u2019t<\/em> be, but if your job happens to be murdering innocent people by the dozens, it\u2019s probably best to find the silver lining and try to enjoy it a little, right?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The core plot of Scorpion<\/em> wraps up at about the halfway point of the book.<\/strong> (That\u2019s when it becomes clear that what really matters isn\u2019t how a story ends, but how it begins \u2014 at least in this book.) That might sound deliberately vague, but of course, we mustn\u2019t forget the message coming from the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The second half of the book is essentially a bonus round<\/strong>\u2014especially for Quinn Mitchell. And bonus rounds are usually enjoyable, because they\u2019ve been earned. Scorpion<\/em> earns it by being an exceptionally entertaining and original piece of sci-fi.<\/strong> Quinn unexpectedly sets off on a journey that leads her back to the past\u2014possibly even back to herself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But the ease and casualness with which she does this slightly undermines the grim, violent vision of the future that Cantrell had worked so hard to build. But of course, it clearly echoes the luxurious lifestyle that Ranween\u2014aka the Elite Assassin\u2014enjoys between bouts of ruthless killing. What could that be saying? Maybe that contract killing is a great gig\u2014not the least bit taxing on the soul, and pays like a dream? Yep, that\u2019s the message. Absolutely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I\u2019ll Be Bad Tomorrow. No\u2014Scratch That\u2014Today!<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The main villain in Scorpion<\/em> is, in some ways, an excellent choice. You believe they have the brainpower to orchestrate attacks on a massive scale. What\u2019s harder to buy, though, is the idea that they\u2019d actually want<\/em> to pull it off. Why? Because Cantrell seems to forget about building up the villain\u2019s motivations. People don\u2019t just flip from good to evil in a heartbeat. Not without a reason.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Scorpion<\/em> ends in a way that\u2019s overall quite satisfying. Great characters, a believable vision of the future, unexpected (and sometimes expected) twists and surprises\u2014all present and accounted for.<\/strong> What\u2019s more, Cantrell\u2019s book avoids the usual curse of future-set stories, where the heroes do little else but try to fix the mistakes they made the day before yesterday. Or the day after tomorrow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
