Marjorie Liu and Sana Takeda\u2019s graphic novel series is a mind-blowing creation that takes place in a fantasy world like no other. A world that\u2019s unbelievably complex, brutally unforgiving, and heartbreakingly beautiful all at once.<\/strong> Monstress: The Vow<\/em>, the sixth volume in the series, continues the saga full of power struggles, hidden supernatural beings, betrayals, and horrors\u2014where Maika Halfwolf, the protagonist, not only faces countless enemies, but can\u2019t even trust her friends\u2014or her own family. The only one she might<\/em> be able to count on is the ancient, bloodthirsty entity lurking inside her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Monstress<\/em> Takes the Graphic Novel to a Whole New Level<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The creators of Monstress<\/em>, the Lennon and McCartney of the graphic novel world\u2014Marjorie Liu and Sana Takeda\u2014have basically swept every major sci-fi and fantasy award with their joint masterpiece. And if they haven\u2019t yet, they definitely will. Deservedly so.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The war between humans and Arcanics is being manipulated by otherworldly forces.<\/strong> Supernatural beings walk the earth, sometimes in their true forms, other times hiding behind masks\u2014or in someone else\u2019s skin\u2014fighting each other for power. In this chaotic, utterly opaque, and constantly shifting web of alliances, Maika Halfwolf and her few remaining friends are just trying to stay alive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

All of this is delivered in panels that look like paintings.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

If, while reading Monstress<\/em>, you start thinking how amazing it would be to read this Game of Thrones<\/em>-level intricate plot in book form, there\u2019s really only one argument against it: in that case, you\u2019d miss out on the stunning visuals created by Sana Takeda.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s usually a given that the book version of any story beats the movie or comic. Monstress<\/em> might just be the one true exception. There\u2019s simply no way your imagination could conjure up the same lush, painterly wonderland on its own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Vow Means Nothing<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

By Volume 6, it\u2019s already crystal clear that in Monstress<\/em>, even your best friend could turn out to be your worst enemy. Family included. And it\u2019s not even that Liu\u2019s story is packed with traitors\u2014it\u2019s just that there are so many conflicting agendas that they inevitably crash into each other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And right in the tangled middle of all these conflicting interests is Maika, who everyone wants something from. Most of all, they want to get their hands on her.<\/strong> Or destroy her. Or steal her power. Or just eliminate her, you know, as a precaution\u2014before she brings down the entire world. (And you can\u2019t even say they\u2019re being overly cautious\u2014Maika is a walking neutron bomb \u2013 as evidenced by the city of Constantine, or rather, the ruins of the city of Constantine.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Monstress<\/em> keeps you in a constant state of uncertainty. As if the countless factions with differing goals weren\u2019t enough, the shadows of long-dead, once-powerful characters\u2014like the Shaman-Empress or Maika\u2019s mother, Moriko\u2014still linger and continue to shape the present.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Vow<\/em> doesn\u2019t move the plot much further. The Federation keeps up the siege of Ravenna. The bond between Zinn and Maika deepens. And Kippa is\u2014unsurprisingly\u2014adorably cute. (One of the best moments is when the flesh-eating monster, as usual, pauses to marvel at just how cute she is.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Oh, and the Wolf Queen? The one we once called both Grandma and the Big Bad Wolf? She\u2019s now officially the John Wick of this graphic novel saga. (Though come to think of it, that label could easily apply to at least five other characters in The Vow<\/em>.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Monstress<\/em>: This is a Cruel World<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Vow<\/em>, the sixth volume of Monstress<\/em>, actually opens with two separate standalone stories. One takes us into Maika\u2019s past, the other into Kippa\u2019s. In true Monstress<\/em> fashion, Kippa\u2019s flashback takes us to one of the very few idyllic moments of her short life\u2014which just so happens to be set in a starving refugee camp. Surrounded by the impoverished, the hungry, the crippled, and those desperately yearning for affection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But that\u2019s exactly what Monstress<\/em> is about. That total contrast. The beautiful exterior that hides rot and a ravenous thirst for power.<\/strong> A world that looks<\/em> idyllic at first glance, but is filled with unfathomable evil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


But if we look at it strictly from Maika Halfwolf\u2019s perspective, The Vow<\/em> makes it painfully clear\u2014again\u2014that the worst betrayals usually come from those closest to you. Not that Maika hasn\u2019t been used to it for a long time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
