The Red Queen Is Back in Action<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

With Red Queen<\/em>, Juan G\u00f3mez-Jurado has broken through the nearly impenetrable barrier of international recognition after publishing numerous books in Spanish. Not an easy feat if you\u2019re not writing in English. To pull it off, you need something truly extraordinary\u2014something that grabs readers\u2019 attention immediately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And Antonia Scott is precisely that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The superintelligent yet quirky and eccentric personality commands both your admiration and your sympathy, making her even easier to relate to.<\/strong> (Much like Lisbeth Salander, a.k.a. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

In a genre where the police bring in an external consultant to essentially do their job for them, it\u2019s no easy feat to stand out. It takes a character of Patrick Jane\u2019s caliber (The Mentalist) to make it work. Personality is the decisive factor\u2014it\u2019s what everything hinges on. When the character is compelling enough, readers or viewers are often willing to overlook the fact that the consultant is essentially just retracing the same steps the police would have taken without them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But in Red Queen<\/em>, that\u2019s not the case at all. Juan G\u00f3mez-Jurado quickly and convincingly establishes that Antonia Scott is genuinely one of the smartest people on Earth.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I Can\u2019t Handle This Tension!<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Red Queen<\/em> is, moreover, a fast-paced thriller<\/strong> where the intellectually demanding investigative work is frequently punctuated by tense action sequences, ranging from car chases to bomb explosions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But Juan G\u00f3mez-Jurado employs additional tools to keep the tension\u2014and your blood pressure\u2014consistently high:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What do cops hate more than anything? When the guys in black suits swoop in from above, constantly meddling in their work and telling them what to do. Well, the Red Queen (and her loyal partner, Inspector Guti\u00e9rrez) operate undercover, with fake credentials and a reputation that\u2019s\u2014let\u2019s just say\u2014lower than dirt. Constant clashes with other law enforcement agencies? Absolutely guaranteed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And then there\u2019s this: if you\u2019ve got an antisocial genius who\u2019s perfect for the job\u2014or rather, the only<\/em> one fit for the job\u2014what do you not<\/em> do? Treat her like a supercomputer. You don\u2019t start overclocking the processor to squeeze out an extra 2% performance and risk frying the whole system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But let\u2019s ask Mentor, the Red Queen\u2019s boss, what he thinks:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2013 “What\u2019s your take on this, dear sir?”
\u2013 “Uh, I\u2019d say it\u2019s worth a shot!”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Of course, we know full well that these things wouldn\u2019t work in real life. But in the world of Red Queen<\/em>, they absolutely do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Inspector Jon Guti\u00e9rrez, Reporting for Duty!<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

When Jon Guti\u00e9rrez trudges up the stairs to Antonia Scott\u2019s rooftop apartment in the very first chapter of Juan G\u00f3mez-Jurado\u2019s book, panting heavily, you don\u2019t yet realize that Red Queen\u2019s eventual sidekick will almost instantly rise to co-lead status.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thanks to the contradictory personality of the eccentric yet warm-hearted inspector, who is also open about his sexual orientation, Red Queen<\/em> adopts a well-crafted tone of self-irony and playful banter. (Thankfully, it never sinks to the silliness of The Thursday Murder Club<\/em>.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You wouldn\u2019t expect anything like this from the introverted Antonia Scott.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When Jon Guti\u00e9rrez\u2019s character steps into the background for a while later in the book, you can\u2019t help but notice how much his presence is missed… In short, G\u00f3mez-Jurado\u2019s thriller doesn\u2019t rely solely on its brilliantly unique protagonist\u2014Inspector Guti\u00e9rrez is just as essential to its success.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Women on Top<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Antonia Scott, the star of Red Queen<\/em>, is exceptional in every sense. Beyond her unparalleled intellect, she\u2019s also got a fierce willpower and an abundance of courage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

G\u00f3mez-Jurado, however, didn\u2019t stop at creating just one exceptionally strong female character. His book, whose ruthless villains target the world of the upper crust (yet another ingredient for potential success), also puts Carla Ortiz, the daughter of one of the world\u2019s wealthiest people, through significant trials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So, if you\u2019re a fan of strong female characters, this book gives you two for the price of one\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Serial Cruelties<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Creating a diabolically cruel villain is relatively easy. Crafting one that\u2019s genuinely memorable? That\u2019s much harder. I won\u2019t say Red Queen<\/em>\u2019s Ezekiel doesn\u2019t meet the minimum standard for absolute madness, but based on the very first crime scene he left behind, he could have been capable of much more! Let\u2019s cut him some slack, though. After all, activities like this consume a lot of energy and time, with relatively little payoff\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Moreover, Antonia Scott and Inspector Jon Guti\u00e9rrez\u2019s first adrenaline-pumping, action-packed investigation leaves several loose ends, promising even more spine-chilling excitement to come.<\/strong> It also teases a shadowy, manipulative, devilishly cruel, and, quite possibly, truly memorable adversary lurking in the background.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
