Deadly Class<\/em>, a comic series with one of the most unbelievable<\/strong> storylines and some of the most downright unlikeable protagonists<\/strong> of all time, kicks off its eighth volume, Never Go Back<\/em>, with an unusual opening: a lenghty drug trip.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pls, Don’t Mess With Me, Mr. Remender!<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

If your protagonist is unreliable, unpredictable, unstable, a chronic backstabber, and endlessly whiny, a drug-induced hallucination is probably the last thing that will make them more relatable to your readers. Drug trips are like listening to someone describe their dreams in excruciating detail: nobody gives a damn except the dreamer. In fact, the more they share, the more irritating it becomes.

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The entire first quarter of Never Go Back<\/em>, which corresponds to issue 36, might as well be flushed down the toilet as a complete waste of ink<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Of course, if only a quarter of Never Go Back<\/em> were just wasted space, you could count yourself lucky\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Never Go Back<\/em> \u2013 To Common Sense<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Before Rick Remender sat down to sketch out the plot for the eighth volume, he probably hacked up a good chunk of phlegm<\/strong>, spat it as high as he could, and then stepped underneath it. Only after that did he begin writing\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Marcus and his love interest, Maria, come to the conclusion, after some pondering, that having dealt with most of their enemies, they really have only one option left: to return to the very place they had desperately tried to escape\u2014the King\u2019s Dominion Atelier of the Deadly Arts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yes, the same place where they\u2019re public enemies number one and two.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But if they\u2019re going back, why the hell did they leave in the first place? Oh, right\u2014because they\u2019d have been killed if they stayed? Got it. Uh, wait a minute.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Never Go Back<\/em> \u2013 Just Walk in Circles<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

This is the point where you start to wonder what on earth was going through Rick Remender\u2019s head at this point. \u201cNever go back?\u201d he might have mused. \u201cNah, let\u2019s go back!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Or maybe he remembered that the title of his comic series is Deadly Class<\/em>, after all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And perhaps he thought that Bobblehead Master Lin, who resembles a seahorse preserved in formaldehyde, would, of course, warmly embrace his prodigal lambs\u2014after finishing up his bile-spewing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sure, why not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The only thing he didn\u2019t consider was that Deadly Class<\/em> is at its weakest when set in the actual school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And so begins the tiresome slog<\/strong> once more\u2014the endlessly dull<\/strong> Who\u2019s the Coolest in School game, perfectly exemplified by Shabnam, the nerdy loser, holding a top spot; after all, he\u2019s leading some ridiculous point system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Deadly Class<\/em> as a Concept is Broken<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Think about any military training program that prepares people to kill\u2014from elite commandos to ninjas. Strict discipline, dedication, constant drills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now compare that to Deadly Class<\/em>. These students wouldn\u2019t even be able to hit the target. They\u2019re perpetually high on drugs<\/strong>. If they\u2019re not, they\u2019d still miss due to withdrawal-induced trembling. Or they\u2019d just shoot their own teammates, since student-on-student violence is an everyday occurrence at the King\u2019s Dominion. Some even bring axes and katanas to the cafeteria\u2014presumably to deal with their cereal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And what kind of order could there possibly exist in a school where students regularly sneak out in groups to attend rock concerts?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Who could focus on studying under these circumstances?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I\u2019d bet half of these assassin trainees are failing all their classes and only scrape by on their teachers\u2019 leniency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Never Go Back<\/em> \u2013 Unless You\u2019re Saya<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Not in every chapter, but in about every second one, Rick Remender manages to pull off a section that\u2019s not entirely nonsensical. Or maybe it is entirely nonsensical<\/strong>, but it still somehow works.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Never Go Back<\/em>, as usual, that\u2019s thanks to Saya. You\u2019re obviously not the only one who\u2019s reminded of Quentin Tarantino\u2019s Kill Bill: Vol. 1 by the Tokyo adventures of the Japanese sword-wielding girl.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yakuza, absurdly over-the-top violence, sheer madness<\/strong>, revenge\u2014and, of course, a katana.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I can\u2019t quite remember why Kenji s so pissed at his little sister, but if it\u2019s because their family sent Saya to the King\u2019s Dominion instead of him, then he\u2019s wasting his breath. The school is good for nothing except turning promising young criminals into drugged-up, sociopathic, bloodthirsty lunatics<\/strong>. And Kenji managed to achieve that all on his own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Saya finally does something this comic has been crying out for: she ensures that at least one scumbag bastard pays for their sins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And the fact that she heads back to the most abominable institution<\/strong> in the American education system\u2014the King\u2019s Dominion School of the Deadly Arts\u2014is forgivable only because, given her family circumstances, even a filthy, rat-infested leper colony<\/strong> would seem like an improvement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
